The Three Sisters
Pictured above is an illustration of a corn stalk, bean stalk, and squash.
The Three Sisters is the name of the companion planting of three main crops: maize (corn), climbing beans, and winter squashed. The corn provides the support for the beans to climb on. The beans provide nitrogen to the soil. Lastly, the squash prevents weed growth along the base of the corn.
This type of companion planting is/was very popular with agricultural indigenous people of North America.
